Testimonials
“I worked in Blacktown Hospital Intensive Care Unit as a registrar for three months in 2004 and for the whole year in 2005. I really enjoyed working in the modern unit. The work environment is very good. All the staff are friendly and cooperative and the teaching environment is excellent. The consultants are extremely helpful and approachable. The structured teaching sessions several times every week, supervised by the consultants, are invaluable in learning about intensive care medicine. The unit’s devotion to teaching is really praiseworthy. Ward rounds are thorough and the rapid turnover of patients is an opportunity to learn all aspects of critical illness including various procedures. The computer system (CIS - clinical information system) gives an excellent overview of the patient, even over the course of days/ weeks – and learning the system did not take long. The limitations of not having some sub-specialties, ie neurosurgery, trauma, cardiac surgery etc are recognised (this is a C-12 unit for intensive care training). Overall, the unit runs in a very systematic and organised way and I would love to work here again.”

"I initially worked for a year at Blacktown ICU in 2005. I have come back for two terms in 2007, as I was very pleased with the work in 2005. The staff specialists have been good to work with, very approachable and take a keen interest in educating the junior staff. Bedside teaching, case presentations, journal clubs and regular weekly PowerPoint presentations have all helped me improve my knowledge and presentation skills. My approach is also now more structured. Regular discharge summary reviews and mortality meetings have also given me an insight into the auditing of the ICU. The staff are very friendly and working here has always been a pleasure.”

“Blacktown ICU is staffed by a dedicated, multidisciplinary team whose goal is to provide high quality care to critically ill patients. The core of the team consists of intensive care specialists, registrars, nurses, physiotherapists and dieticians. From a registrar’s point of view it is a very challenging but also rewarding environment. Registrars are well supported and encouraged to participate in the unit’s extensive educational program that includes up to three weekly registrar or consultant lead presentations. Working life is facilitated by the unit’s well-established electronic patient records that integrate medical, nursing and pathology reports and the recent change in rostering practice from the old ‘7 days/night on’ to a more manageable ‘3 days/ 3 nights on’. The general friendliness and camaraderie of all the staff make Blacktown ICU a great unit to work in.”
