Blacktown Intensive Care Unit (ICU) is an internationally renowned flagship of excellence for teaching, research and clinically applied information technology.

The ICU is a multi- disciplinary mixed medical and surgical ICU serving as a referral centre for other surrounding hospitals in the region.

The Unit is a teaching facility affiliated with both the University of Western Sydney and Sydney University and is accredited by the Joint Faculty of Intensive Care Medicine for advanced Intensive Care training [C12].

With a catchment of over 700 in-patient beds, the Intensive Care caseload is between 1,200 and 1,400 admissions annually, with a mean Apache II of 20.

The original site of Blacktown Hospital was first commissioned in April 1965 – however, due to the rapid population growth in the surrounding suburbs in 2000, a $90 million redevelopment was completed incorporating state-of-the art technology and services.

The Blacktown Intensive Care Unit now runs 16 beds together with campus- wide clinical outreach services such as the Medical Emergency Team, the Trauma Team, the Transesophageal Echocardiography service, a Central Line service and the Total Parenteral Nutrition Team.
